Depending on the sport and in relation to the water temperatures, you need different types of wetsuits. In addition, your personal feeling for cold and your activity in the water is decisive, what you need to feel most comfortable.

Accordingly, it is individual from when someone needs booties, gloves or a hood. The following table is a little help for orientation, based on my personal experience ( fast freezing person :D) and what I learned from other surfers.

below 9 °C

6/4 mm or thicker.

+ Booties + Head + Gloves

9-13 °C

5/3 mm or 5/4 mm

+ Booties + Head + Gloves

14-18 °C

4/3 mm

+ Booties or + Head

19-23 °C 3/2 mm Fullsuit or Shorty
über 23 °C Rashguard, Leggings

Scuba Diving

Here is the same, it depends on your feeling of getting cold and addinoal because of the less moving under the water, you can getting cold faster. In some places there is a thermal barrier, so that the surface temperature of the water drops sharply after a few meters of depth.

Below 10 °C

8/7 mm Semidry or Drysuit. Yes this is freezing.

10-17 °C

8/7 mm Semidry to Wetsuit or Drysuit

+ Booties + Head + Gloves

18-21 °C

5 to 3 mm Fullsuit, or 7-5 mm Fullsuit

+ Booties oder + Head

22-25 °C 3 mm Fullsuit to 2 mm Shorty or 5 to 3 mm Fullsuit
26-28 °C 2 mm Shorty to Dive Skin or 2 mm to 1 mm Fullsuit
+ 29 °C Dive Skin or 2 mm to 1 mm Shorty

Mid-Cold-Tempature 14-18 °C

Surfing in mid-cold-water tempature...

Europe, USA, Canada, South America, South Africa, West Coast, Australia, New Zealand from Autumn to Spring: 4/3 mm Wetsuit and add Booties and Hood.

Warm-Water 19-23 °C

Surfing in warm water...

Europe, USA, Canada, South America, South Africa, West Coast, Australia, New Zealand in summer time: 3/2 mm Wetsuit and the tough one already start to go with boardshorts and Bikini.

Tropical Water +23 °C

Surfing in tropical water...

Indonesia, Australia, Central America, every tropical place in the world :D Just wear your bikini or boardshorts, grap your board and jump in the water. Depends on the sun and your skintype, use a rush guard and leggings to protect your skin and the water (because of needing less sunscreen). They also protect your skin against "rush" from the board.
